What Is the 491 Visa?
The 491 visa (Skilled Work Regional Provisional visa) is a points tested visa, that allows skilled workers and their families to live, work and study in designated regional areas of Australia for 5 years.
491 Visa is not a permanent visa, but if you meet the relevant requirements, it provides a pathway to permanent residence through the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191) after you have held an eligible regional provisional visa for at least 3 years.
To apply, you must be nominated by an Australian State or Territory government agency or sponsored by an eligible relative, have an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list, have a suitable skills assessment, meet the points and English requirements, and receive an invitation to apply.
A subclass 491 state nomination or eligible family sponsorship gives you 15 additional points towards the skilled migration points test — making it the most accessible pathway for applicants whose points score falls short of the 189 visa or 190 visa invitation threshold.
The 491 visa replaced the former subclass 489 visa. The subclass 489 visa is now closed to new applicants. Transitional arrangements apply for applications already lodged and for applicants on the 489 pathway to the 887 visa.

State or Territory Nomination

Your sponsor must meet the relevant sponsorship requirements, and your nominated occupation must appear on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Sponsorship by an eligible relative also provides 15 additional points, but invitations are issued through a different process than State-nominated applications.

After You Receive Your 491 Visa Invitation
