491 Visa Occupation List — Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491)
Which Occupations Qualify for the 491 Visa?
The 491 visa occupation list sets out every occupation eligible for the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) subclass 491 visa. Your nominated occupation must appear on this list — either the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or the relevant Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) for regional areas — before the Department considers your application.
Each occupation has a designated assessing authority — only a skills assessment from the correct authority for your occupation satisfies the 491 visa requirements. The ANZSCO code for your occupation also determines which authority assesses you and how the Department classifies your skills.
New South Wales — 491 Visa Nomination Pathways
New South Wales offers three distinct 491 visa nomination pathways:
- NSW 491 Pathway 1 — Apply directly to a Regional Development Australia (RDA) office for nomination. This pathway targets applicants with a genuine connection to or job offer in a specific NSW regional area.
- NSW 491 Pathway 2 — Submit an EOI in SkillSelect and be invited by NSW to apply for state nomination. NSW selects applicants based on occupation demand and points score.
- NSW 491 Regional Direct Pathway — A direct regional pathway for applicants already living and working in regional NSW.
